Assignments:
º HSSPF "Rhein-Westmark" (HQ: Wiesbaden): 11.11.1943 - 8.05.1945.
º Führer SS-Oberabschnitt "Rhein-Westmark": 9.11.1943 - 24.03.1945.
º HSSPF "Griechenland" (Greece; HQ: Athens): 8.09.1943 - 4.10.1943. ["Evidently he saw his new posting [to Greece] as a chance for glory, and so he ignored the bureaucratic niceties in his haste to assert himself on a grand scale. His first act on arriving in Athens was to call in Prime Minister Rallis and his Interior Minister: in future, he told them, they would be answerable to him, and were not to communicate with General Löhr in Salonika without his permission. He then made what his successor later termed a 'bloodthirsty' broadcast on Radio Athens, which included a long and vicious diatribe against the Jews. He tried to assert his jurisdiction over the entire anti-guerilla campaign in Greece, and also ordered the compulsory registration of all Jews in southern Greece ["On 3 October {1943} the frustrated Stroop ordered all Jews to register within five days on pain of being shot, and thereafter to report every other day to the main communal offices. When Many Jews refused to register on time, the Germans prolonged the registration period to 17 October. But of an estimated 8,000 Jews in Athens, only 1,200 ever registered"].
"After barely a month in Athens, Stroop had succeeded in antagonising his more powerful colleagues. Not only had he challenged Löhr's right to conduct anti-guerilla operations; he had also implicitly attacked [Hermann] Neubacher's handling of Greek politics.... Neither [SS-Ogruf. Dr. Ernst] Kaltenbrunner nor Neubacher wanted a clumsy extremist like Stroop treating the Greeks as he had treated the Poles. Neubacher dropped a hint to his old friend [Kaltenbrunner] about Stroop's lack of political finesse, and the result was that on 4 October, after barely a month in his new post, Stroop received the unwelcome news from Kaltenbrunner's department that he was being sent back to the Reich." (<--Inside Hitler's Greece, Yale University Press, 1993). Stroop was succeeded in Athens by the less ambitious and less forceful SS-Gruf. Walter Schimana].
º SSPF "Warschau": 19.04.1943 - 13.09.1943 [Appointed to succeed SS-Oberf. Dr. Ferdinand von Sammern-Frankenegg, who had failed in initial attempts to quell the uprising by ZOB rebels in Warsaw. Between 19.04.1943 and 16.05.1943, Stroop led a mixed force of Waffen-SS replacement/training units, German and Polish police forces, and German Army engineers, and various Latvian, Ukrainian, and Lithuanian guard units in the annihilation of the Warsaw Ghetto. In closing his "grand operation", Stroop himself pushed the plunger which detonated exlosive charges inside Warsaw's central synagogue. He reported on this operation in a series of daily teletype messages to the HSSPF "Ost" in Krakow, SS-OGruf.u.Gen.d.Pol. Friedrich-Wilhelm Krüger; these messages were ultimately compiled in one complete report, along with dozens of photos, entitled "Es gibt keinen jüdischen Wohnbezirk~ in Warschau mehr!" ("The Jewish Quarter of Warsaw is no more"). He was able to report the following on 16. May 1943: "180 Jews, bandits, and subhumans were destroyed. The Jewish quarter of Warsaw is no more! The grand operation terminated at 2015 hours when the Warsaw synagogue was blown up." The "Stroop Report" was used as evidence by the prosecution in the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, and prompted defendant Generaloberst Alfred Jodl to say with contempt, "The dirty arrogant SS swine! Imagine writing a 75-page boastful report on a little murder expedition, when a major campaign fought by soldiers against a well-armed army takes only a few pages."]
