Gerhard Matzky resigned after graduating from high school in Breslau on March 26, 1912 as a cadet in the Royal Prussian Army. He came here for 4 Upper Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 63 in Opole. In November 1942, he was then placed in the leaders reserve. On 10 January 1943 he was appointed commander of the 21st Infantry Division. On April 20, 1943, the transport was followed to lieutenant general. The rank seniority was thereby set to 1 April 1943. Meanwhile, both clasps him have already been awarded to his Iron Crosses. He was appointed in 1952 commander of Border Guard West. In 1956 he joined the German Army and took over as Lieutenant General later as Commanding General of the First Corps in Münster. On February 29, 1960, he was adopted into retirement. He was awarded with Star of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Great Cross of Merit. After that, he was active volunteer in the German Red Cross (DRK). He was from May 1965 to 1978 as the successor of General retired colonel Hans von Salmuth Chairman of the Association of German soldiers.
