Heinrich Keese rendered from November 1, 1938 his military service in Pioneer Battalion 20 from. As detectors at battalion headquarters, he took part in the Polish campaign and was subsequently promoted to corporal. With the 3rd Company of the battalion he participated in the campaign in the west, where he was wounded at Arras. From June 1941 he took part in the Russian campaign. From 20 June to 1 October 1942, he visited an officer-training course and was promoted on October 1, 1942 to reserve lieutenant. He was then in the reserve battalion of the pioneer battalion and returned on February 1, 1943 Engineer Battalion 20 and became battalion adjutant. On January 1, 1944 promoted to lieutenant in the reserve, he became chief of the 2nd Company and awarded in Gold on January 3, 1944 for bravery with the German Cross. On 27 July 1944 he received honorary Roll Clasp of the Army and was promoted on August 1, 1944 to captain. In autumn 1944 he proved itself in heavy defensive fighting in Vistula bridgehead at Baranov, he was awarded on 20 October 1944 with the Knight's Cross. From 20 November to 16 December 1944, he attended a battalion commander training course at the Pioneer School in Dessau part and was then commander of the pioneer battalion 20 . With this proven it at the heavy defensive battles in space Sprottau / Sagan and was on March 28, 1945 awarded the major of the reserve with the oak leaves. On April 22, 1945 he was severely wounded in the battle for the Berlin-Köpenick station. By transporting the wounded on a fishing boat he escaped Russian captivity and finally got wounded in British captivity.
