Waldemar von Gazen joined the infantry regiment of the Wehrmacht in 1936 as an officer candidate. On September 1, 1938, he was promoted to lieutenant. In the Union of the Infantry Regiment 66 (13th Infantry Division) Waldemar of Gazen took part in the German attack on Poland. On 29 September and 14 October 1939, the Iron Cross II and 1st Class were given to him. In 1940, Gazen commanded the 2nd Company of the 66th Infantry Regiment in the Western campaign. On October 13, 1940, his regiment was renamed to the Teaching Infantry Regiment (mot. 66) and moved to Romania. There, the regiment formed the teaching staff of the German teachers' groups in Romania. In May 1941, the Lehr-Regiment returned to Germany and was renamed to the Schützen-Regiments 66 on 28 May 1941.
In June 1941, Gazen took part in the attack of the Wehrmacht on the Soviet Union as part of the 13th Panzer Division. In the southern section of the eastern front, the regiment advanced to Rostov. On November 15, 1941 Gazen was awarded the German Cross in Gold. After the Battle of Rostov, which had lasted from 17 November to 2 December 1941, the regiment was withdrawn.
In 1942, the Regiment for Gazes still underwent the 13th Panzer Division on the Don (3rd Panzerkorps in the 1st Panzer Army of Army Group A). On July 5, 1942 the regiment 66 was renamed the Panzergrenadier Regiment 66. On September 18, 1942, Gazen was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross as chief lieutenant and chief of the Second Company of the Panzer Grenadier Regiment , The crusade of the crosses of the Gazans was related to the Rostov battles in July 1942, which finally led to the (repeated) occupation of the city on 25 July 1942. By taking an intact road bridge across Temernik in his section, Gazen created the prerequisite for taking Rostov.
1943 was the regiment around Gazen in Kerch in the Crimea. Later in the Caucasus in the area of the Terek and Kuban-Brückenkopf. As early as January 18, 1943, Gazen was given the oak leaves to the knight's cross as the main man and leader of the 1st Company of the Panzer-Grenadier Regiment. In the reason for the award of the oak leave, his achievements are named as leaders of a combat group, which destroyed 22 Soviet tanks within two days. Moreover, according to the language used at the time, Gazen had "a decisive part" in the return of the divisions from the Kuban region. On August 28, 1943, Gazen was appointed commander of the 66th Panzergrenadier Regiment. In September 1943, the Regiment of Gazes in the fighting area of Melitopol distinguished itself again. On 3 October 1943, the fighting group led by Gazen was mentioned in the military report. On the same day, Gazen received the swords for the oak leaves on 3 October 1943, in the function of the commander of the regiment and in the service of a major.
In 1944, his regiment was located in southern Ukraine. There the regiment was destroyed in Operation Bagration in August 1944. Gazes were badly wounded in these battles. After his recovery Gazen was transferred to the General Staff of the Army on 1 August 1944. There Gazen received a general staff training and his promotion to the Major Generall. His rank was fixed on 1 February 1943. The service rank of a major iG was Gazens last service. During the last months of the war, Gazen was assigned to the 13th Panzer Division as First General Staff Officer (Ia). From April 3 to 4, he temporarily commanded the 2nd Panzer Division .
