Roßmann joined on 1 March 1940 the 7th / Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52) and participated in both the campaign in France and the Battle of Britain He scored a total of seven victories before JG 52 was transferred to Russia .
By the end of 1941 he had already recorded 32 aerial victories. After his 250th combat mission and his 48th victory, he was awarded on 19 March 1942 with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. From March to June 1942, he was employed as a fighter pilot instructor in the supplementary hunting group East and returned only then to his squadron. Nevertheless, he was able to almost double his combat statistics by the end of the year by reaching his 80th victory on 29 November 1942.
On July 9, 1943, Rossmann tried to rescue a flying colleague who had crash-landed behind the Russian lines. He was picked up by Russian infantrymen, his comrade Lieutenant Seyler shot and he wounded. From the ensuing prisoner of war he was released in October 1949.
Rossmann had scored 93 victories, Erich Hartmann began as Rossmann's wingman.
