Kurt Witschel joined the 4th Company of Infantry Regiment 7 on 1 April 1934 and was transferred to the 8th Company of Infantry Regiment 28 in 1935. With this he took part in the Polish and Western campaign and fought in June 1941 as a sergeant in the 4th Company in Russia. In 1942 he was promoted to Oberfeldwebel and platoon leader in the 4th Company. In the heavy defensive fighting at the end of November 1942 at the land bridge of Demjansk he distinguished himself as the leader of the 2nd Company and became what he was awarded the Knight's Cross on 4 January 1943. On 1 June 1943 he was promoted to lieutenant, on June 1, 1944, followed by promotion to lieutenant. In early February 1945, he fought in the "Konradstellung" in the Slovak Ore Mountains and was able to hold a commanding height against several Russian attacks. For this defensive success he was honored on March 11, 1945 as leader of the 9th Company with the Oak Leaves and then promoted to captain. In April 1945 he took over the leadership of the III. Battalion. At the end of the war, he was taken prisoner by Brno, from which he escaped in the same year.
