Siegfried Amerkamp joined the Wehrmacht in 1940. He was on 22 November 1943 as a corporal and machine gunner in the storm company of the Grenadier Regiment 459 in the battles between Pripet and Dnieper awarded the Knight's Cross. Subsequently, he was promoted to corporal. In 1945 he was captured as a platoon commander on the Western Front, from which he broke out and reached the lines of an Elite unit. In this he was used as Oberscharführer. After the surrender, he was released in October 1946 from captivity and worked in Duisburg as a construction worker and grinder.
