Berndt Lubich von Milovan was born on December 7, 1913 in Riga , Latvia, the son of wealthy parents.
Having joined the Waffen-SS as a volunteer, he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class in January 1941 and, in January 1942, the 1st Class of the Iron Cross through merits on the Eastern Front . As Obersturmführer and leader of the 1st battery of the Sturmgeschützabteilung 3 of the 3rd Panzergrenadierdivision "Totenkopf" he and his battery during the withdrawal battles in the autumn of 1943 in the southern section of the Eastern Front were instrumental in the defensive successes against the repeatedly advancing Soviet troops and involved in the support of the heavy-handed tank grenadiers. From Milovan forced with his assault guns, at the top of which he always fought, again and again the decision against overwhelming hostile pressure from the Soviets. For this purpose, the Supreme Commander granted him on October 14, 1943, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross .
