Heinz-Oskar Laebe joined the police in Hamburg in 1932 and was promoted to lieutenant on 1 January 1935 in the Prussian state police. On October 15, 1935 he was transferred to the 12th Company of the Infantry Regiment 44 in the army and was promoted on October 1, 1937 to lieutenant. He became head of the 5th Company and took over at the beginning of the war, the 8th Company of the Infantry Regiment 44th He participated in the Polish and Western campaign and acquired both classes of the Iron Cross. From March 1, 1941 to July 27, 1942, he was with the Infantry Replacement Battalion 44 and was on August 5, 1942 added to the leader reserve of the Grenadier Regiment 44. On August 20, 1942, he took over the I. / Grenadier Regiment 44, whose commander he became on November 13, 1942. Promoted to Major on January 1, 1943, he was honored on April 5, 1943 with the honorary clasp. For his services in the defensive battles at the Narwa bridgehead, he was awarded on 7 March 1944 with the Knight's Cross. On June 1, 1944 he was appointed leader of the Grenadier Regiment 23. From July 21 to July 31, 1944, he led the Grenadier Regiment 44 and became its commander on August 1, 1944. On January 30, 1945, he was promoted to colonel and on April 29, 1945 for his defenses in the area of Libau awarded the Oak Leaves.
