Gerd Kelbling was born on 12th June 1915 in Salzbrunn. He entered the Krigsmarine on 8th April 1943 as Offiziersanwärter. Between 1934 and 1940 he served with the sailship "Gorch Fock", th Ligh Cruiser "Karlsruhe, the Panzerschiff "Deutschland" and ships at the 1., 2. en 4.Minensuch-Flottille. Eventually he commanded the "M 89" and de "M 6". From 10th August 1940 he served two patrols on the "U 557". On 23rd October he was placed with the 8.Unterseebootsflottille as Kommandant "U 593". Between 2nd March 1942 and 1st December 1943 he undertook 16 patrols with this ship to the American coast, the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean and managed to sink 16 ships with a total of 40.918 BRT. His ship was sunk on 13th December 1943 by depthcharges from British and American destroyers. The crew was rescued and became prisoner of war.
