THE GAULEITERS

The highest subdivision of the NSDFAP was the GAU. The chief of each district was the Gauleiter ( Gau leader). A Gauleiter was a leader of a regional branch of the NSDAP.

In theory, a Gauleiter was merely a representative of the Nazi Party who served to coordinate regional Nazi party events and also served to "advise" the local government. In practice, Gauleiters were unquestioned rulers of their particular areas of responsibility. The local government establishment merely existed as a rubber stamp for the Gauleiter.

The Gauleiters were appointed by Adolf Hitler, and ostensibly responsible only to him, but during the war they took their orders from Martin Bormann.

The numbers of districts fluctuated and by the war’s end there were forty-three.

The following five autographs are from a collection recently acquired. These came from a war time collection consisting of both military and political autographs. The cards measure 2 ½” x 4 “, all the same heavy card stock autographed by the Gauleiter with a newspaper clipping photo glued to the card.
